‘Kent is the only place for happiness’: Jane Austen, Happiness and Melancholy with Dr Jane Darcy (1973) in conversation with Sir Sherard Cowper Coles (Hertford, 1973).
Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles is the President of the Jane Austen Society. He spent some 30 years as a British diplomat, and now works in the City. He is the author of Cables from Kabul and Ever the Diplomat. At this event he will be in conversation with Dr Jane Darcy, teaching fellow in Comparative Literature at KCL, and an honorary lecturer at UCL. Jane is writing a book on Jane Austen and Melancholy.
Both Sherard and Jane grew up in Sevenoaks, Kent, a place with strong associations with Jane Austen. They will be giving their personal takes on the joys and sorrows of Austen’s life and writing.

There will be one drinks reception at 6:30pm, followed by the talk which will begin at 7.30pm. The evening will end at 8:30pm.
This event is open to all Somervillian’s and their guests. Numbers are limited so early booking is advised. The ticket price is £25 or £15 for younger Alumni (Matriculated 2005 or later).
