Somerville Highlights
Our latest highlight is hot off the press: we are proud to announce that Professor Aditi Lahiri, our Senior Research Fellow and previously Governing Body Fellow, has been named as one of four leading Oxford academics to be awarded a major European Research Council Advanced Grant to fund her pioneering research in Linguistics. This is the fifth time that Professor Lahiri has been the recipient of a prestigious ERC grant, as well as the third time that she received advanced grant funding – a record for Oxford. The awards are worth up to €3.5 million (£2.9 million) over five years and will allow the researchers to build teams and develop their pioneering work.
The past term has seen us both make steps towards a more inclusive, open future, and celebrate our alumni and their accolades. We were thrilled to announce that we will soon be welcoming Professor Iyiola Solanke to succeed Stephen Weatherill as our Jacques Delors Professor of European Law. Professor Solanke is a distinguished scholar whose expertise in anti-discrimination legislation, social movements and the judiciary and governance in Europe as well as law around racial integration. We look forward to working with her to ensure that we are living up to the ethos on which we were founded: to include the excluded, nurture potential, and foster excellence.
Embedding this ethos, earlier in the year we announced a brand new partnership with St Frideswide’s Primary School as part of the Oxford Hub’s twinning programme with the Conference of Colleges, the body that represents Oxford’s colleges and PPHs which is currently chaired by our Principal Jan. Our students and academics will provide support to students and teachers at the school such as workshops, visits to the college site for activities like singing in the chapel, and one-to-one academic support through Schools Plus (Oxford Hub’s tutoring programme). We hope that as a result, Somerville will be more open to and rooted in a local community that give so much to the University.
