In our wider community, alumna Dame Nia Griffiths (1975, Modern Languages) was named DBE in the Queen’s final Birthday Honours in recognition of her long career of public service. Our Senior Research Fellow, Professor Patricia Kingori, won a £6.5m grant in the first of the Wellcome Trust’s new Discovery Awards scheme to support her international, multidisciplinary 8-year research project investigating the role and power dynamic of ‘endings’ in global health crises. And Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE (née Ibrahim, 1978, Medicine) was named the next President of the Royal College of GPs, the UK’s largest medical college.
The summer’s alumni gatherings have continued to remind us that being together is part of the warp and weft of this community, a familiar and constantly renewing rhythm. We hope you can join us this term as we continue that tapestry, with events including our Sanctuary Celebration and Literary Tea marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio, the latter featuring Professor Emma Smith (1988, English), and award-winning actor Sir Simon Russell Beale. Finally, we end the year with one of the most important happenings in the college calendar: our annual carol concert. We hope you can join us either in Oxford on December 8th or in the beautiful surrounds of Temple Church in London on December 9th to enjoy words and music for the festive season.
