Somerville is very proud to announce that our Fellow and Tutor in Biochemistry, Professor Elena Seiradake, had been elected as an EMBO Member, recognising her outstanding achievements in the life sciences.
Seventy-one life scientists in 23 countries have been elected as EMBO Members, a lifelong honour that recognises research excellence and exceptional achievements. The new members become part of a global community of more than 2,200 life scientists.

Professor Elena Seiradake
EMBO is an organisation that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. It supports talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulates the exchange of scientific information, and helps build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.
Professor Elena Seiradake commented that, “In a world that can be divisive, EMBO celebrates collaboration, cohesion, and progress through curiosity-driven research and innovation. I am proud to be elected a member and grateful to the wonderful mentors, team members and colleagues with whom I share my scientific journey.”
Professor Seiradake is head of the Seiradake Lab, which was established in 2014 with the mission of understanding molecular mechanisms in the nervous and vascular systems. The lab is interested in understanding how relatively few families of cell surface receptors mediate myriads of cell-to-cell communication events as they direct important biological functions in tissues.

Professor Seiradake and her team use an integrative approach that combines structural biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and high-resolution imaging to understand the principles by which receptor complexes assemble, and how they trigger cell decisions.
By participating in the work of EMBO, the members collectively influence the direction of science and strengthen research communities in Europe and beyond. EMBO Director Fiona Watt welcomed the new EMBO Members, saying, “Their election celebrates their achievements and creativity. By contributing their unique perspectives and experiences, they will greatly strengthen the network of leading life scientists who are shaping the field.”
