Please join us in congratulating our alumna Dr Katerina Kaouri (1999, MSc and DPhil, Applied Mathematics) on receiving the Hedy Lamarr Prize 2025.
The Hedy Lamarr Prize for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematics and its Applications is awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications to celebrate mathematicians whose work has made a significant impact beyond academia. In the case of Dr Kaouri, who is currently a Reader in Applied Mathematics and Director for Impact and Engagement at Cardiff University, the award recognises her use of mathematical modelling to tackle real-world problems and generate a culture of mathematical collaboration and opportunity across academia, industry, health and government. From advising the UK government during Covid-19 to organising sell-out public engagement events or showing industry how mathematics can address societal issues, Dr Kaouri consistently exemplifies the belief that mathematics has the power to change lives.
Katerina’s own research articulates the true spirit of mathematical sciences as a conduit for knowledge exchange. In the biomedical field, Katerina co-leads the GW4 interdisciplinary network Fertility: In Vitro, In Silico, In Clinico (inFer), which bridges mathematics, experimental biology, and clinical practice in order to improve IVF success rates. Dr Kaouri is a recognised TEDx speaker, and was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in February 2025.
