Together, we’ll build strength

Resilience isn't just about financial security. It's about enabling our students and staff to build flexibility, wellbeing and strength so they can make the most of every opportunity.

Plan for every possibility

It's about ensuring that future generations can benefit from Somerville by expanding our provision of teaching and learning spaces, and safeguarding our most vulnerable subjects.

And write the next chapter

Working together, our plans for resilience will ensure that we preserve Somerville's distinctive values, but update them for a changing world.

Our Priorities Are

Endow at-risk fellowships

To future-proof research and teaching, particularly in the humanities, where posts are seldom fully endowed, we need to increase the College’s endowment by £12m. Amazing support from Somervillians and friends has already enabled us to endow the Shirley Williams Fellowship in Politics, the Liz Cooke Fellowship in History and the Christian Carritt Fellowship in Music.

Now we are seeking to endow our fellowships in:

Cost: £12m

Fund a new fellowship in Economics

We are keen to fund the next five years in post for a brand new domus fellow in Economics. In this subject area, recruiting to teaching and research positions is challenging. Our new post will allow us to attract talented individuals to ensure dedicated and secure provision.

Cost: £50,000 p.a.

Secure the Somerville Skills Hub

The Somerville Skills Hub is a pioneering programme that provides our students with a ‘termly toolkit’ to thrive in their academic growth, career development and welfare. By supporting this programme, you can enable us to continue providing the seminars, workshops and mentoring that drive long-term success.

Cost: £30,000 p.a.

Impact Stories

Holly Cobb (2021, French and Linguistics; pioneer of Young Carer support at Oxford)

“As a Young Carer, coming to Oxford as a Young Carer was pretty daunting and often fraught with guilt about my family at home. But, since arriving, the community at Somerville has given me the confidence to carve out a path that will allow me to make a difference for other Young Carers.”

Sam Ajakaiye (2021, History; Target Oxbridge ambassador)

“For me, my degree result was proof that I can thrive whilst embracing every part of my culture and identity. I hope to maintain this mentality throughout my career, from my graduate job in consulting to the other opportunities I get thereafter.”

Professor Almut Suerbaum, Tutorial Fellow in German

“RISE will allow Somerville to look with confidence to the future. It will allow us to secure ways of accepting the brightest of students; to teach them in buildings that speak to contemporary forms of teaching; and to support and challenge them through our unique tutorial system.”
