Current students of Somervillle’s Janet Vaughan Society were delighted to host a meeting of the Janet Vaughan Society earlier this week on the theme of ‘Careers in Cardiology’.
Somerville’s alumnus and current JRF Dr Aaron Henry discussed his experience of clinical fellowship in Jersey, alongside his recent work on establishing the Jersey Fighting Failure (JeFF) programme to tackle heart failure on the island. This was followed by Professor Simon Woldman, Consultant Cardiologist and Director of Barts Heart Centre in London, who shared his insight into medical leadership. He also shared his experience leading a world-renowned cardiology centre, supporting high-impact research, and advancing quality and patient safety in cardiac care. The talks were preceded by a drinks reception and followed by a formal dinner in hall.
The Janet Vaughan Society is named after the renowned doctor and pathologist Janet Vaughan, who was instrumental in creating Britain’s blood bank system, in pioneering the use of liver extracts to treat pernicious anaemia and in humanitarian care for the inmates of Belsen concentration camp. Having studied at Somerville herself, Vaughan returned to College as Principal after WWII, successfully taking the number of students reading science degrees to 40%.
