It can feel hard to keep up with events in the world right now. Fortunately, Somerville alumni very often have an expert view to share, based on years of front-line service.

One such individual is our new Principal Catherine Royle (1984, PPE). Before returning to Somerville, Catherine led a fascinating career as a NATO political adviser and British diplomat, including several years as Ambassador to Venezuela during the rule of Hugo Chávez.

Catherine’s years in Venezuela have seen heightened interest in the first days of 2026, following the United States’ action against the Maduro regime. In the last week, Catherine has spoken to both LBC Radio and Sky News, giving her expert view as the situation unfolds. Footage from both of these appearances can be found below.

Catherine also found time to speak at length to the author and former diplomat Arthur Snell for his ‘Behind the Lines’ podcast. Here, Catherine was able to give a more in-depth analysis of the situation in Venezuela, informed by her personal knowledge of the key players in the Chávez regime and a diplomat’s concern at the confusion and instability unleashed by US actions.
