Join the Somerville City Group for a talk by Professor Steve Roberts, Somerville’s Professorial Fellow and the Man Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Oxford as he considers the future of AI.
6.30pm (talk at 7pm) Monday 3rd June, The Court Room, St. Andrew’s Holborn.
We live in an era dominated by data and algorithms. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is as impressive as it is frightening. From playing games against us and writing emails for us, to making decisions about us and displacing us in the job market, we cannot escape the impact AI is having on our everyday lives. As well as its societal impact, AI is catalysing a revolution in science, industry and commerce. In contrast to the backdrop of AI as a threat, it helps make commercial processes more efficient, underpins intelligent automation in industry and enables us to learn more about the world around us.
Professor Stephen Roberts will guide us through the rapid rise of AI and the revolutionary implications for our everyday lives.

Steve Roberts is Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Oxford. He is a Professorial Fellow of Somerville College, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. He co-leads Oxford’s Eric & Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Programme and is co-founder of the Oxford spin-out company, Mind Foundry. Steve’s research focuses on the theory and practice of making AI more robust in real-world deployments, particularly in physics, ecology, finance and engineering.
