Rights in Crisis: A Theatre of Death: Assessing the Death Penalty in India
(in collaboration with the Oxford Human Rights Hub)

In our second conversation for the Rights in Crisis, we will be hosting Prof. Anup Surendranath and Prof. Jon Yorke to discuss the death penalty in India.

Professor Anup Surendranath is the Executive Director of Square Circle Clinic (formerly: Project 39A) at NALSAR, Hyderabad and one of India’s leading voices on constitutional law, criminal justice, and the death penalty. Under his leadership, Square Circle Clinic has produced landmark empirical research on capital punishment, legal aid, and mental health in the criminal justice system. Anup has argued and advised on several death penalty cases before the Supreme Court of India, combining rigorous scholarship with impactful legal advocacy. Prior to NALSAR, Anup taught at National Law University, Delhi.

Prof. Jon Yorke is the Professor of Human Rights and the Director of the Centre for Human Rights (CHR) at Birmingham City University. He is an expert in international human rights law and has advised the United Nations, the European Union, and numerous governments including, Gambia, Myanmar, Spain and the United Kingdom. He has acted in human rights cases in the United States, Sudan, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and has submitted amicus curiae briefs in death penalty cases.
