Event Start Date: 28 June 2024

Location: Phoenix Picturehouse and Somerville College

Join us for a special screening of the 2023 film One Life to commemorate the monumental impact of Doreen Warriner, a Mary Somerville Research Fellow in the 1930s whose role in saving 15,000 Czechs from Nazi persecution is depicted in the film.

This event is being hosted to mark Refugee Week at Somerville College, as part of our ongoing work as a University College of Sanctuary. The screening will take place at the Phoenix Picture House and will be followed by a Q&A.

Programme:

  • 4:45pm Arrive at the Phoenix Picture House for 5pm screening of One Life
  • 7:00pm Drinks reception Mary Somerville Room
  • 7:45pm Buffet in Hall

This inspiring film has a special connection with Somerville as the film features depictions of two Somervillians Esther Rantzen, (1959, English) whose famous episode of the “That’s Life” series brought Nicholas Winton’s achievements so movingly to the nation’s attention. It also features a great unsung heroine of the war, Dr Doreen Warriner, (Mary Somerville Research Fellow 1928-31) who is thought to have helped save 15,000 refugees from Czechoslovakia.  Finally, the screenplay was co-written by a Somervillian, Lucinda Coxon (1981, English).

The panel discussion will include Lucinda, Romola Garai (who portrays Doreen Warriner), and the film’s director, James Hawes. We will also hear from current Somerville Sanctuary scholars.

Food for the evening will be provided by Damascus Rose Kitchen, an Oxford-based social enterprise serving traditional Middle Eastern dishes prepared by women refugees now living in Oxford.
