Student groups & Clubs

Somerville students are interested in an enormous range of hobbies and activities, and this is reflected in the number of clubs, societies and sports teams at the College.

Our 2014 University Challenge team reached the competition finals and in 2015 our women’s netball team and men’s cricket team both won their inter-Collegiate Cuppers competition.

Whether you’re keen to paint, join a football team, play an instrument, sing in a choir, write, talk history, record music or even bake cakes, the Junior Common Room (check the link if you want to know what this means!) looks after a number of different societies and interests. You can find their own website but if you want to know more generally about drama, arts and music at Somerville, please keep reading!

Drama, Arts and Music

Somerville has its own Drama Society, with substantial funds to invest in producing shows, or to stage a Somerville show in the College Quad. Somerville graduates who are forging successful careers as producers or directors include Katie Whittaker, Tessa Ross, Danielle Lux and Martin Roe.

The College plays host to an annual Arts Week, which is organised by the JCR Arts Officer, and aims to showcase as many art forms as possible. In 2010, Arts Week included a photography day, a world music night, a student film screening and a fashion show in the College’s chapel.

Somerville has a thriving music scene, spearheaded by the Somerville Music Society, which stages concerts throughout the year, involving many different performers and showcasing all genres. Somerville Music Society also coordinates opportunities for students to provide free music lessons to other members of college. There are pianos available in College for student use, a dedicated music room with a piano and drum kit, and other rooms which can be used for music practice.

Finally, Somerville has one of the best College choirs in Oxford, which produces its own albums and regularly goes on tour, most recently to the US. Visit Choir & Music for more details.

We will soon be posting a few pictures from our various societies, clubs and teams, and their events and victories.
