The Thatcher Scholarship Programme was established as a living legacy to one of Oxford’s most important alumnae. Margaret Thatcher studied Chemistry at Somerville before going on to become the first woman and the first scientist to be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
In 2025 we welcomed 4 new graduate Thatcher Scholars, with 4 undergraduates also selected in October. They joined 22 current Thatcher scholars (nine undergraduate, one postgraduate medic, twelve postgraduates), bringing the number of scholars in residence to 30. There are now 42 Thatcher alumni scholars and the total number of awards made stands at 74.
