The Thatcher Scholarship Programme was established as a living legacy to one of Oxford’s most important alumnae. Margaret Thatcher studied Chemistry at Somerville before going on to become the first woman and the first scientist to be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In 2022 we welcomed ten new Thatcher Scholars, five undergraduate and five graduate students, bringing the total number of current scholars to 28. In addition to our current scholars, there are now 19 alumni scholars, including two former undergraduate Thatcher Scholars who have continued their studies at Somerville but under different scholarships.
