This is a test page for training purposes. This portion of text is written in ‘Intro’ style, which you can access from the ‘Formats’ drop-down at the top-left of the text editor.

This paragraph is written in the default text setting ‘Paragraph’. It’s not very interesting.

Here’s a heading.

That was a bit more exciting, wasn’t it? There are three heading styles. I usually select Heading Style 3, as it’s smaller and I don’t want to be ostentatious.

Let’s try something else. You can use bold and italic via the same shortcuts or tabs at top of page as you would in Word.

You can also use a quotation style for an exciting quotation from someone. To attribute the quotation, just click return and write the name.

You can also do nice bullet points with the Somerville star by selecting bullet points as in Word, like this:

  • Item A
  • Item B
  • Item C

If you have enough items, you can also create a two-column arrangement, like the one below. To get this, put the entire list into bullet points then go to Formats>Split List:

  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  • Item 3
  • Item 4
  • Item 5
  • Item 6

Now let’s talk about media. You can add a single image like this by clicking on ‘Add Media’ and either searching for a relevant picture via the ‘Media Library’ tab at top left or you can upload your own picture via the adjacent tab. Like this:

You can also flow text around a picture, so it looks more editorial, as here:

Image Galleries

You can also create image galleries, if you’ve got several pics and you want to make them look nice. Just go to ‘Add media’ and select ‘Create gallery’. Please note, I’ve added a useful list of image tags you can search by at the end of this document. N.B. It works best if you use an even number of pics, as it presents them in rows. Here’s an example:

Hyperlinks

Another important text edit style is buttons and hyperlinks. There’s a number of ways of doing this. You can insert a hyperlink directly into the body of your text like this. To do that, highlight the relevant portion of text you want to use a hyperlink, go to the link in a chain icon which is fourth from the right in the text edit section, add your URL and click return. Alternatively, if you want to add a link to a page within the Somerville website, you can highlight the text, go to the chain icon, click on the cog on the right, then use the search field to look for a page such as ‘Access‘. This will bring up relevant entries (do check you’ve got the right one!).

Another way to add links is with Buttons and Plus Icon.

Buttons

The button link is ideal for short call-to-action phrases (1-2 words ideally, 3 words max), such as ‘Apply’ or ‘Read More’. To use the button, create your hyperlink as above, then, while keeping the text highlighted, go to ‘Formats’ and select ‘Button’.

Plus Icons

The plus icon is better when you need a longer link. Exactly the same principle applies in terms of creating it.

A brand new website to explore

Document Link

If you’re linking to lots of docs (pdfs, Word), you simply upload the doc to the website via the Media Library, then copy the URL and create the hyperlink as before. While the text is still highlighted, select the ‘Download’ link from ‘Formats’.

Accordions and Lightboxes

The next important way to present information is via ACCORDIONS and LIGHTBOXES. Accordions are for when you’ve got a lot of text and you’re trying to keep everything looking really slick and clean. Lightboxes are for when you want to show off a bit more.

To add these types of content, you need to use ‘Flexible Strips’, which are found in the large box immediately this ‘Wysiwyg’ text editor. I’ll talk you through this now.
