SOMERVILLE WINTER MEETING
in Somerville (Flora Anderson Hall, Wolfson Building)
SATURDAY 9th MARCH 2019
Following the Somerville Association AGM at 2.15pm
Our next Winter Meeting in Somerville will be on Saturday 9 March 2019 and will be preceded by the AGM of the Somerville Association, which will include updates from the Principal, Baroness Jan Royall, and the President of the Somerville Association, Baroness Alison Wolf. Please click here to find the Somerville Association 2019 AGM Agenda. The minutes from the 2018 AGM can be found here.
The speaker at the Winter Meeting itself will be Susie Dent (1983, Mod.Langs.)
Logophilia and That Woman in Dictionary Corner
Susie is a lexicographer and etymologist. She is also a well known media personality and has appeared in many TV and radio programmes. She is best known for her role in “Dictionary Corner” on the Channel 4 game show Countdown in which she has appeared every year since 1992. She has made over 2500 appearances. She has been Honorary Vice-President of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) since 2016. She has a long list of OUP publications to her name. She says she can promise “lots of silly videos, joyous etymologies, a lot of myth-busting, and a bit of swearing (for the best reasons).”
Susie will show some clips from her shows and will then be interviewed by Rebecca Jones (1985, History), Radio 4 Arts Correspondent and News Presenter, after which Susie will take questions. We expect the afternoon to be entertaining and informative .
The day will end with tea.
The charge for the meeting is £15, including tea. For recent graduates (matric 2010 and later), the charge is £10 for the meeting and tea. Before the meeting, a light luncheon (soup/sandwiches/fruit salad/a glass of wine) will be available from 1.00pm in the Margaret Thatcher Centre at a cost of £15.
