Somerville London Group: West London Synagogue
SOMERVILLE LONDON GROUP
Thursday 6 June at the West London Synagogue, 33 Seymour Place, W1H 5AU
An exotic newcomer amid the elegant Georgian buildings north of Marble Arch, West London Synagogue is one of the oldest in the UK. It was built in 1870 to serve a fast -growing congregation established thirty years earlier by progressive Jews from two distinct traditions.
Of the beautiful House of Prayer, a contemporary guide-book writer remarked, ‘the decoration is somewhat peculiar’. Come and see for yourself on 6th June, when the Synagogue will open its doors to us a few days before the early harvest Festival of Shavuot (Pentecost). There will be a welcoming glass of wine, followed by a talk and a tour.
One of the Rabbis, David Mitchell (St Peter’s College, 1998), has very kindly agreed to talk about the history of Progressive Jews in the UK with time allowed for ‘everything you ever wanted to ask a rabbi’. Do join us for what promises to be a very special and stimulating evening.
The cost of the evening is £15 (or £5 for matric 2012 and later). Guests are welcome. You may book by telephoning Amelia on 01865 280626 and paying by card.
