Rhondda Rips It Up
In collaboration with the Welsh National Opera, Somerville College is hosting an opera/musical entertainment at the Oxford Playhouse celebrating our alumna who was a Welsh Suffragette, Lady Rhondda.
This work has been commissioned by WNO to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage. It is not an opera, but rather an operetta, or mix of musical comedy and music hall, but it is sung by ‘proper’ opera singers, including WNO stars, Lesley Garrett and Madeleine Shaw. The work is an all – female production: composer Elena Langer, librettist Emma Jenkins, director Caroline Clegg, and cast (playing all roles including Churchill, Asquith and Lloyd George).
This production has been described as ‘a real celebration of independent women’, but also as ‘a merry romp’ – the evening will be fun.
The booking process is in three parts, we are sorry if this seems a bit complicated but please bear with us!
The performance itself will begin at 7.30pm and tickets can be booked through the Oxford Playhouse here. After the performance there will be a champagne reception for Somervillians and an opportunity to meet the cast. Please follow this link to sign up for this free reception.
If you can reach Oxford in good time, please join us in Somerville before the performance for some light refreshment from 6.00pm. Let us know if you can join us by contacting Isabel on 01865 280626 or alumnievents@some.ox.ac.uk
