To commemorate its first quarter century The International Women’s Forum UK commissioned The Lots Road Group of artists to paint portraits of 16 of its most inspiring women. The resulting exhibition will be on display in the Mary Somerville Room at Somerville College, Oxford on Thursday 10th March – Saturday 12th March 2016.
The exhibition features four of the founders of the IWF UK and the first 12 chairs, including two Somervillians – Karen Richardson and Moira Black. Also featured are Celia Goodhart, a Visitor of Oxford University; Barbara Mills, the former DPP (LMH); champion racing driver Jean Denton, the first woman to hold a ministerial post at the Northern Ireland office; Barbara Hosking, former speechwriter for Harold Wilson; Rosalind Gilmore, private secretary to five Cabinet Ministers and veteran journalist Katharine Whitehorn.
The Lots Road Group of artists are all specialists in portraiture working mainly in oils, as in most of the paintings in the current exhibition, but also in print and other media. They met at The Heatherley School of Fine Art in Lots Road, Chelsea – one of the few art colleges in Britain that focuses purely on portraiture and figurative art.
