1958 60th Reunion

15th March 2019

Difficult though it may be to believe, it is now sixty years since our first year at Somerville. What better moment to get everyone together again? So we are planning a 60th anniversary luncheon at Somerville on Friday 15th March 2019 and hope that everyone who can manage to travel to Oxford will come. The Principal, Baroness Jan Royall, looks forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

The plan for the day is this :
12.15pm Reception in the Mary Somerville Room (the old JCR)
1.00pm Lunch in the Reading Room at the bottom of Hall
2.00pm Optional tour of College, or a film viewing in the Margaret Thatcher Centre
3.30pm Tea in the Mary Somerville Room (husbands/partners are warmly invited at no extra charge)
Price for the day £30

We shall be arranging for a ‘year photograph’ and after lunch, if you like, you can do a tour of Somerville to see recent developments, or you can watch the wonderful BBC film of Dame Janet’s life; or of course you can simply chat and catch up with old friends.
There will be an exhibition of memorabilia – so please look out for any items you may have to remind us of the late 50s, such as photographs and newspaper cuttings, and if you bring them with you, we will display them. There will also be a Library exhibition of publications by members of our year.

The College has lost touch with some members of the year (they are listed below) and if you can help us to reconnect with any of them, please encourage them to email Liz Cooke (

We think a pre-lunch catch up may also be a help. If you would like to send in a brief resumé of your life after Somerville (no more than 100 words max to we will compile a ‘Ruby Bulletin’; you can of course have an entry in this whether you are able to come to the luncheon or not. But we do hope that you will come. Please also spread the word and encourage your friends to come too.

We very much look forward to seeing you.

Margaret Adams (Chemistry), Averil Cameron (Sutton, Lit Hum), Margaret Goddard (Alston, Mod. Langs.), Lucy Ismail (Deas, Lit.Hum), Margaret Jay (Callaghan, PPE), Lynette Moss (Vaughan, Physiology), Auriol Stevens (History), Frances Stewart (Kaldor, PPE), Janet Treloar (Geography), Jennifer Wiggins (Walkden, Mathematics)

At the reunion, we plan to hand out a list of email contact details of those who are attending. If you do not wish your details to be included on this list, please do say so when booking.

You can book either by telephoning Amelia on 01865 280626 and paying by card, or by sending a cheque to the Alumni Office, Somerville College, Oxford, OX2 6HD; cheques payable to Somerville College. Please include a note about any dietary or other requirements and details of any extra guest for tea.
We have a few rooms available, so if you are interested in B&B in College on the 14th or the 15th March please speak to Amelia about this.

We regret that we have very little parking space available in College and priority is given to the disabled. Please let Liz Cooke ( know if you have difficulties.
