Ain Neuhaus has been awarded the George Pickering Prize, which is awarded for the candidate receiving the highest marks in the Medicine Finals and the Prize Vivas.
Ain, 28, matriculated at Somerville in 2009, and went on to graduate with a First in Medical Sciences, specialising in neuroscience. He then intercalated a DPhil (2012-2016, St John’s College & Radcliffe Department of Medicine) with Professor Alastair Buchan and Professor Daniel Anthony, investigating how stroke affects regulation of blood flow in the brain.
Following completion of his medical studies at Somerville, Ain will start postgraduate medical training in the Academic Foundation Programme at Oxford University Hospitals, with the long-term aim of pursuing a career as a clinician-scientist in neuroradiology.
Ain said: “I’m delighted to have been awarded the George Pickering Prize, and very grateful for all the support and excellent tutorial teaching provided by Somerville over the years. I’d like to particularly thank Dr Helen Ashdown and the wonderful clinical tutors, and Prof Daniel Anthony and the equally amazing undergraduate teaching team.
“It has been a privilege to belong to the medical community at Somerville, which has a long track-record of academic excellence at both preclinical and clinical levels, as well as a real sense of camaraderie.”
Professor Anthony, Fellow and Tutor in Medicine at Somerville, said: “Given that our medical students are selected from an extremely strong cohort of applicants, this is a truly remarkable achievement.
“Ain has also made a great contribution to teaching at Somerville, tutoring our pre-clinical students for the last 6 years in Neuroscience, Physiology and Pathology.”
