Our alumna Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE (née Ebrahim, 1978, Medicine) has been elected as the next Chair of the Royal College of GPs, and will become the fifth woman to hold the position.

The RCGP is the UK’s largest medical college, with over 50,000 members. It represents and supports GPs on key issues including licensing, education, training, research and clinical standards. The RCGP has both a President and a Chair, but the former is a mainly ceremonial role. As Chair, Professor Hawthorne will set the college’s policy direction, and leads the RCGP decision making body.

Prior to her election last July, she served as Vice Chair (Professional Development) of the college from 2015-18. She is currently the Head of Graduate Entry Medicine at Swansea University and Provost of the SE Wales Faculty of the RCGP. She remains a salaried GP in Mountain Ash, South wales.

Professor Hawthorne will begin her three-year term in November 2022.
