Three remarkable Hong Kong Somervillians have been profiled on the College website in recognition of the continued strengthening of ties between the College and its Hong Kong alumni.
In March this year Dr Alice Prochaska, Principal, and Sara Kalim, Development Director, visited Hong Kong to take part in both the Oxford Alumni Weekend and in an event for Somervillian alumni.
“Hong Kong hosted the first ever reunion for all Asian Oxford alumni in March, and Somerville was well represented,” said Dr Prochaska. “It was inspiring to meet several Somervillian residents who, true to the college’s traditions, are notching up careers rich in pioneering achievement.”
One of the three Somervillians profiled on the website is Audrey Donnithorne, who, after spending her earliest years living in Sichuan province in southwest China, spent her career as an academic largely focused on the Chinese economy. A second Hong Kong-based alumna, Sharon Chan, is Head of Asia for the international non-profit organization Aeras, which focuses on the research and development of Tuberculosis vaccines. The third profile is of Carrie Yau, who spent thirty years working as a civil servant in Hong Kong, witnessing at close quarters the territory’s transition to become part of the People’s Republic, and then developed a new career in education.
