Congratulations to Somerville College alumna Suzanne Heywood on receiving the World Woman Hero Award 2024 for resilient leadership and education advocacy.

The World Woman Hero Award is conferred by the World Woman Foundation, a US-based public charity with a footprint in 20 countries and 15,000 members worldwide.

Suzanne is receiving the Hero award in recognition of her unshakable commitment to pursuing education amidst adversity, a story she revealed in her memoir Wavewalker: Breaking Free, published in 2023. The book recounts in moving detail how Suzanne’s physical journeys across the globe aboard the sailing boat Wavewalker were mirrored by an unstoppable inward quest for education that culminated in her arrival at Somerville, and which you can read more about in last year’s Somerville Magazine.

Suzanne will receive the Hero award on January 18, 2024 at the World Woman Davos Agenda, which occurs alongside the World Economic Forum to highlight women’s pioneering role in advancing global equality.

Speaking of the honour, Suzanne commented, “I am honoured to accept this award for all the women who have struggled for equality – and are still struggling. After my experience growing up on Wavewalker, promoting equality is one of my passions, so I’m proud to work with organizations like Exor, CNHi, and Iveco Group, which take it equally seriously.”
