The Somerville College Choir and their director, Will Dawes, warmly invite you to their forthcoming celebration of the music of Herbert Howells at the Chiltern Arts Festival this March.

The programme, entitled ‘Howells: Life and Loss’, will feature a range of music exploring the influences, works and enduring legacy of Herbert Howells. The first half of the programme will look back to the music and teachers that influenced Howells, featuring music by Tallis, Walford Davies, Wood, and Howells himself. The second half, meanwhile, will look to the colleagues, pupils and others whose work has been inspired by Howells’ clear harmonic language, including Cecilia McDowall, David Bednall, Madeleine Dring, Ivor Gurney, and Bob Chilcott. Sitting at the heart of the programme will be a performance of Howells’ poignant requiem, written in memory of his son Michael.

Date: Saturday 4th March, 7.30pm

Venue: St Mary’s Church, Henley-on-Thames
