Our annual Medics’ Day will be held on the 16th March 2024. This year, we are delighted to welcome Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE (née Ibrahim, 1978, Medicine), Chair of the Royal College of GPs, as our keynote speaker.
Programme:
- From 10.00am Coffee and registration in the Margaret Thatcher Centre
- 10.30 Dame June Raine (1971), Chair of the Somerville Medics and Dr Helen Ashdown, Janet Vaughan Tutor in Clinical Medicine: Welcome and remembering Liz Cooke (1964)
- 10.45 Professor Dame Kamila Hawthorne (1978): Primary Care in 2030 – how should the current model of general practice be brought into the 21st century?
- 11.15 Francesca Dakin (2021), current DPhil student in Primary Health Care: Navigating change and crisis in UK General Practice: the value of relational coordination in teams
- 11.30 Q&A
- 11.45 Undergraduate presentations to be chaired by Dr Natasha Robinson (1972). These are the students’ Final Honour School Research Project viva presentations, describing the laboratory projects (8-14 weeks long) undertaken as part of their FHS year. A Prize for ‘Potential for Scientific Progress’ will be awarded.
- 12.30pm Drinks Reception in MTC for delegates, update on Medicine at Somerville 2023, and presentation of student prize
- 1.00 Lunch in Hall

- 2.15pm AGM of the Somerville Association chaired by Dr Nermeen Varawalla (1989), President of the Somerville Association
- 2.30 Guest speaker, Professor Dame Angela McLean (1979, Maths): Science Advice for Government – more blessed to give than to receive.
