Sam Gyimah (1995, PPE) has defended the government’s record on encouraging students across the UK to vote in the forthcoming General Election.

Mr Gyimah is the Cabinet Office Minister responsible for elections. His comments appeared in an article in The Independent, and follow criticism by the parliamentary Labour Party that the Conservative-led government’s voter registration reforms make it harder for students to vote. Mr Gyimah countered the claims.

“We have done a lot to make it easier for students to register,” he said, pointing to the £530,000 the government is planning to spend on encouraging students to put their names on the electoral register.
