Results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, published last week, found that the University of Oxford had the largest volume of world-leading research of any higher education institution in the UK.

The rankings were notable for including a new category called “research impact”. The University of Oxford has profiled some of its leading examples of recent research impact in a series of 36 mini-videos on the University website. Of the videos focused on particular examples of research, four focus on individual Somerville Fellows or Senior Research Fellows. These videos feature Professor Mason Porter on networks; Professor Steve Roberts on Advanced Mathematics and ‘citizen science’; and Professor Jennifer Welsh on action against genocide and ethnic cleansing. Senior Research Fellow Sir Marc Feldmann is the subject of a further video entitled: Fighting Arthritis: the development of anti-TNF therapies.

You can access these videos via the University webpage above or directly on Youtube via the following links: Sharing the Beauty of Networks, Making the Most of Citizen Science, Acting Against Genocide.

Two of the REF panellists were also Somervillians: Professor Rajesh Thakker FRS served on the panel on Clinical Medicine and Dr Alice Prochaska, Principal, was a member of main panel D, which had oversight of the Arts and Humanities.
