Together, we'll do the work

To reach net zero, we face the challenge of decarbonising an estate comprising buildings from multiple eras, each with unique energy profiles.

Drive the thinking

At the same time, we have a responsibility to drive the research that will tackle and mitigate these problems for the benefit of all.

And create a sustainable future

It’s a journey that will involve us all, as we seek to decarbonise and honour our responsibility as an institution and a community.

Our Priorities Are

Build a sustainable future

In 2025, we will break ground on a new state-of-the-art building on the ROQ site, enabled by the largest single donation in the history of Somerville College. Built on Passivhaus principles, with state-of-the-art insulation and air movement, it will use photo-voltaic tiles and harness ground source energy to be shared across Somerville’s neighbouring Edwardian buildings.

Support groundbreaking climate research

The Somerville College research community is working on large-scale solutions to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. Drawing on the latest developments in AI and quantum computing, our Fellows’ and students’ are looking at ways to green the internet and scale the use of concentrated cold energy storage for small communities.

Develop a sustainability fund

In order to bring Somerville’s existing buildings and facilities to carbon net zero by 2040, a substantial sustainability fund is necessary. Practical upgrades and refurbishments will join food and travel policies so that the College’s everyday life will meet ambitious sustainability goals, now and into the future.

Impact Stories

Layla Sklar (2021, Biology; former Somerville College JCR Sustainability Officer)

“It is so important to support sustainability at Somerville to ensure that in the future we become the model of a green college that other colleges and institutions aspire to follow. And the RISE campaign is the best way to help us meet our goals.”

Gabriella D’Cruz (2021, MSc, Biodiversity Conservation & Management; Global Youth Champion Winner in BBC Radio 4’s Food & Farming Awards)

“I hope that, if young people get on our side, seaweed farming could become a sustainable source of income that will insulate coastal communities like those of my native Goa from the worst effects of climate change.”

Adriana Mordente, Somerville College Sustainability Officer (2021-22)

“Having a Sustainability Working Group means that every operating leg in Somerville is working towards sustainability from a shared vision and set of values. By being able to make decisions together, we are able to sustain them long-term and create shared strategies for our future.”

Niharika Singh (2023, MSc Nature Science and Environmental Governance; inaugural Savitribai Phule Scholar)

“I hope my MSc will give me the ability to document environmental narratives from India’s historically marginalised communities, and prove that these dispossessed communities have been pioneering sustainable methods from which we can all learn a great deal.”
