Event Start Date: 27 April 2025

You are warmly invited to join us for the first in a new series of talks at College: Somerville on Sunday. Jackie Watson (English, 1986), our Alumni Relations Officer, will repeat for Oxford alumni the talk, held in London last July, entitled Murder of a Middle Templar: why did Sir Thomas Overbury die?

Jackie gained her PhD in early modern literature at Birkbeck College, London, and publishes on the drama of this period. Her recent book considers the letters surrounding the career of Middle Temple law student, Sir Thomas Overbury, at the court of James VI and I, and what led to his death in the Tower of London in 1613.

In her talk, she will look at key ideas in the book, Epistolary Courtiership and Dramatic Letters (Edinburgh University Press, 2024).  How much legal power did James VI and I actually have over his subjects? How easy was Jacobean social climbing? How important was friendship between men, if you intended to do succeed in Jacobean England?

Please do join us in person at 2pm on Sunday 27th April, in the Margaret Thatcher Centre, for Jackie’s talk on the fascinating life of Thomas Overbury, followed by afternoon tea.

If you are not able to be with us in person, then please do register to join us online, as this will be one of our hybrid talks.  If you book for the Zoom link below, we will send that out to you shortly before the date of the event.

Booking for this event are now closed
