Somerville London Group: Dr Alex Rogers
SOMERVILLE LONDON GROUP
Thursday 4 July at the Oxford & Cambridge Club
Professor Alex Rogers and Dr. Lucy Woodall : The Deep – the Hidden Wonders of Our Oceans and How We Can Protect Them
The Somerville London Group is delighted to host Professor Alex Rogers and Dr Lucy Woodall at the Oxford and Cambridge Club on 4 July to talk and answer questions on the current state of deep ocean research, climate change and whether the planet can adapt. They will describe unknown oceans, their expeditions to the Antarctic and the Indian Ocean, and what we can all do about the human impact on our oceans and environment.
Alex Rogers, Oxford’s Professor of Conservation Biology, Consultant for David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II, Senior Research Fellow of Somerville and now Science Director of REV Ocean, will talk about human impacts on the ocean as well as the ocean’s amazing powers of recovery and potential solutions to the problems we face. Alex’s richly illustrated book “The Deep” will be on sale at the talk, and Alex will bring us some highlights of his 30 year career in ocean biology research.
Lucy Woodall, Senior Research Fellow at Oxford and Principal Scientist at Nekton, was the lead biologist on the Weddell Sea expedition to the Antarctic in January 2019. Her team were searching for the wreck of Shackleton’s Endurance, and gathering valuable new data about the state of the ice, how biological communities are likely to change as a result of the impacts of climate change. She has also just returned from Seychelles where she led the first systematic survey of the waters 0-500 m in the Indian Ocean. Dr Woodall’s research seeks to understand the impacts of humans on the marine environment and explore the mechanisms and processes that drive biodiversity.
Our speakers will look at what is needed in big, top-down policy changes and what we as individuals can do. Please join us for a fascinating evening, to meet leading experts, debate the issues and learn what can be done.
The evening begins at 6.30pm with a drinks reception. The talk itself will begin at 7.00pm, followed by questions, and there will be drinks served again after the talk.
Copies of Professor Rogers’s new book, The Deep – the Hidden Wonders of Our Oceans and How We Can Protect Them (£16.99, Headline), will be available for sale.
Tickets are £25 (£10 for alumni who matriculated in 2012 and later) and all Somervillians and their guests are welcome. Please note that the Oxford and Cambridge Club has a dress code.
