Alexander (Xand) van Tulleken (1996, Physiological Sciences) and his twin brother Chris presented Frontline Doctors: Winter Migrant Crisis, which was aired by BBC One on Monday.
The programme followed the brothers – both of whom are doctors, part-time aid workers and television presenters – trekking the path of migrants fleeing through Europe at the height of winter. In the program they travel from Greece, through to the Balkans and on to Berlin and Calais, spending time with migrants, medics and volunteers in camps and clinics at border crossings and transit points.
Xand came to Somerville in 1996 to study Physiological Sciences and went on to gain diplomas in Tropical Medicine and International Humanitarian Assistance, and a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard where he was a Fullbright Scholar.
He is a registered Doctor with the General Medical Council of the UK and is a contributing editor to the first edition of the Oxford Handbook of Humanitarian Medicine. He has also presented numerous shows for the BBC and Channel 4 including Bafta-winning Operation Ouch! – a program on medical sciences aimed at children.
