Join the authors Claire Cumhaill and Rachael Wiseman for an evening of wine and philosophical discussion with a Somerville twist, as they introduce their new book, Metaphysical Animals. Featured as Radio 4’s Book of the Week in February 2022, Metaphysical Animals is being held as both a riveting character portrait of the Somerville quartet of philosophers (Iris Murdoch, Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot and Mary Midgley) and a discourse on the philosophy they crafted to confront the horrors of the Second World War. Writing in The Guardian, Assoc. Professor Anil Gomes (Trinity College, Oxford) noted that: ‘Mac Cumhaill and Wiseman read these women as claiming that we are indeed metaphysical animals: language-using, question-asking, picture-making creatures who seek the mysterious and the transcendent.’ The book is also a compelling narrative, Gomes argues, because the group’s philosophical insights were predicated on the fact that ‘they lived lives filled with lovers, dependents, politics and war – factors which are inextricable from the development of their thought.’

There will be an opportunity to purchase copies of Metaphysical Animals at the event, as well as to have your copy signed.  To register for this event please fill in your details below:
