2018 undergraduate freshers’ week and welcome events

Freshers’ week 2018

The week beginning Sunday 30th September 2018 is freshers’ week. From 14.15 on Tuesday 2nd October, there will be a series of College induction sessions. Attendance at these is compulsory. Other compulsory events in freshers’ week will include one or more meetings with your tutor(s), and inductions at University libraries. There will also be the opportunity to attend optional events organised by the JCR or Oxford SU.

Welcome tea on Tuesday 2nd October 2018

All new students and their parents/guardians are invited to a welcome tea on Tuesday 2nd October. Refreshments will be available from 10.00 until 12.00 in the Margaret Thatcher Centre. Please feel to stop by once you have registered. There is no need to book in advance.

Freshers’ dinner on Wednesday 3rd October 2018

On this evening, there will be a special welcome dinner in the Dining Hall for all new undergraduate students, preceded by a drinks reception with College tutors. This is a formal occasion, so you will be expected to dress smartly. Please note that academic gowns are not worn for this or other formal College dinners. Please email catering@some.ox.ac.uk if you have special dietary requirements for this event. There is no charge for this dinner.

Matriculation on Saturday 13th October 2018

Matriculation is the process by which you officially become a member of the University of Oxford. The matriculation ceremony for Somerville students will be held on Saturday 13th October 2018 at 12.00 in the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street. You will be sent more information at the start of term. You must attend this ceremony unless you have previously matriculated.

First year photograph on Saturday 13th October 2018

The College’s first year photograph will be taken before the matriculation ceremony. Even if you will not be matriculating, please attend the photograph as this will be a record of all students starting a course in 2018. The photographers are Ede and Ravenscroft, and copies of the photograph will be available to purchase later in the term. You will be sent more information at the start of term.
