Dr Robert Hein

Fulford Junior Research Fellow; Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry

Dr Robert Hein is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Chemistry where he works on the development of novel electrochemical and optical sensors for the detection of a variety of environmentally and biologically relevant small molecules and ions.

This encompasses both the development of real-life relevant sensory devices as well as fundamental research across broad areas of chemistry, including supramolecular chemistry, electrochemistry, analytical chemistry and surface science.

He carried out his undergraduate studies at Jacobs University Bremen (Germany), during which he also spent time at Cornell University (USA) and the University of Cambridge (UK). Afterwards he obtained his doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2020 under the guidance of Prof. P.D. Beer and Prof. J. J. Davis working on electrochemical anion sensors. Remaining in the same groups for his postdoctoral work, he is now focussing on the development of fluorescent anion sensors for water monitoring as well as the development of electrochemical and optical methodologies for real-time, continuous ion sensing.
