Somerville has the following facilities:

  • Laundry rooms in every building
  • Gym (complete with treadmills, weights and rowing machines)
  • Two music rooms and a grand piano in hall
  • JCR and MCR common rooms with computers, TVs, and games consoles
  • Dedicated computer rooms
  • College café/bar with a large-screen TV and pool table

Guest bedrooms for non-students can be booked by emailing the Bursary.

Smoking policy

All Somerville-owned premises (indoor and outdoor) and vehicles are non-smoking. A copy of the College policy on smoking forms part of the licence to occupy for your College room.

Contents insurance

Contents insurance provided by Endsleigh Insurance has been arranged for all students living in Somerville College accommodation. The 2015 Insurance Certificate has information about what is covered. The 2016 Insurance Certificate will be available shortly. You can also visit


Any maintenance problems should where possible be reported through the Maintenance Request Form on the College website. This is the speediest way to get the problem brought to the attention of the Maintenance department. In an emergency, please contact the Porters’ Lodge on +44 (0)1865 270600.


All students have a personal pigeonhole in the Porters’ Lodge. Incoming mail will be put in your pigeonhole by the Porters. You should check your pigeonhole frequently, since important information may be sent to you by post. All post should be addressed to you by name at Somerville College, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6HD. Outgoing post destined for other institutions within the collegiate University may be sent free of charge. There are collection boxes in the College. Outgoing ordinary post to all destinations may be placed in the appropriate collection boxes in College, provided it has been stamped with the correct postage value. You can also leave messages at the Lodge for tutors and administrative staff.
