On May 20th 2016, John Stuart Mill’s 210th birthday, Somerville College celebrated with the inaugural John Stuart Mill Lecture delivered by distinguished speakers Alan Ryan and Frank Prochaska to an audience of over 100 Mill enthusiasts. Alan Ryan's lecture was entitled "Drudges, Blue-stockings, and Fallen Women: John Stuart Mill on Sex, Suffrage, and Education" - an intriguing consideration of Mill's contradictory attitudes to women. Frank Prochaska gave us a fascinating and very topical exposition of Mill's views on democracy in America. This very successful event is now a fixed item in the calendar - watch this space for news of next year's speakers.
The first newsletter of the John Stuart Mill Friends group rolled off the press in September 2016. Featuring articles on the first book to go off for repair, Dr Hazel Tubman's report on mapping the marginalia and news from across the pond concerning the University of Alabama's partnership with the College and of course the full text of the two lectures given by Frank Prochaska and Alan Ryan
