Somerville London Group Explore Londinium
This event has sold out, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for availability enquiries and to be put on the waiting list. Tickets are £20 (or £10 for matric 2012 and later) and we are limited to 25 guests.
We are delighted that Marilyn Collis has designed another fascinating walk for Somerville London Group. Members may remember the excellent St James’s walk in 2014 and the Shakespeare walk in 2016 led by Marilyn.
We will explore visible evidence of Londinium and hear about the early development of London over two thousand years ago. From the Walls, we will walk over the site of the Forum up and down hills that Romans used as vantage points and hear about the gates to the ancient city There was an amphitheatre beneath the present Guildhall, a fort at the Barbican, and we will walk along routes taken by Roman roads that are still main thoroughfares today.
The walk’s destination will be the Mithraeum beneath the Bloomberg building – which we hope to be able to visit at the end of the walk. This temple was uncovered, and then re-covered, but is now on display together with many artefacts that were found during the dig. Archaeologists were allowed to delay the Bloomberg building for two years, such was the importance of this discovery. For more information, see their website.
Saturday 22nd September 2018
Meeting at Tower Hill tube station at 1.50pm for a 2.00pm start.
We aim to be at the Mithraeum by 4pm, for a 45 minute visit.
We will then adjourn to a nearby watering hole for refreshments from 5.00-6.00 p.m.
The nearest tubes for the end of the walk will be Cannon Street or Bank.
The walk will not be strenuous, but there are some flights of steps.
