Arrival information for undergraduate students
If you are an undergraduate on a standard course, please read the following information about arriving at Somerville.
You are required to arrive at Somerville on Tuesday 4th October, between the hours of 09.30 and 14.00. The only exceptions are:
- Students from outside the UK can arrive from Saturday 1st October in order to attend the orientation programme for international students taking place on Monday 3rd October. Please visit www.ox.ac.uk/students/new/orientation for more information.
- Certain students will be asked to arrive early to attend pre-sessional courses. You will have already been notified if this applies to you.
The new academic year officially starts on Sunday 9th October, but there will be a full programme of events for new students during the previous week (freshers’ week). Your first compulsory induction session will begin at 14.30 on 4th October.
If are a non-UK student and would like to attend the orientation programme, please email the Housekeeping Department (email@example.com) so they know when you would like to move into your room. Requests must be made well in advance of your planned arrival at Somerville. Please copy the Academic Office (firstname.lastname@example.org) into any emails so we know that you will be arriving early. If you will be attending a pre-sessional course, you do not need to email the Housekeeping Department as we will let them know when you will be arriving.
Travelling to Somerville
A map showing the location of Somerville is available on the College website.
When you arrive at the College, please report to the Porters’ Lodge, which is just inside the main entrance to the College on Woodstock Road and ask for directions to the Mary Somerville Room. There you will be formally registered and given a number of important items including your key(s), and University card. If you have applied for a loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC), it is particularly important that you register on time as your loan will not be released until this has been done. If you have a visa, please bring your passport and Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) so we can take scanned copies. Please note that we cannot register you until you have collected your BRP. Second year undergraduates including your College Parent(s) should be available on 4th October to help you find your way around. Please bring with you a number of passport-size photos of yourself, as you may need these for a variety of purposes in your first week or so in Oxford. If you arrive at the Porters’ Lodge out of office hours, you will be given your key(s), and told how to find your room if you will be living in College. Please check your pigeonhole and collect any post. You will also be given a temporary access card until you can collect your University card from the Mary Somerville Room.
Parking and unloading
Please note that parking is limited within the College. If you have mobility difficulties and require parking, please request this at the earliest opportunity by emailing the Lodge Manager, Mark Ealey (email@example.com). There are double yellow lines in force at the front of the College and parking there will be entirely at the driver’s own risk. There is Pay and Display parking on roads near the College, but this may all be full when you arrive. We therefore recommend parking in the Pear Tree Park & Ride site, to the north of Oxford. The bus from this Park & Ride site stops almost opposite the front entrance of the College, and the bus to the Park & Ride site stops just a few metres from the College’s main entrance. Park & Ride information is available on the Park & Ride website. If you have any queries about parking or unloading, please email the Lodge Manager, Mark Ealey (firstname.lastname@example.org).
