2018 graduate freshers’ week and welcome events

Please read the following information about freshers’ week.

Freshers’ week

The week beginning Sunday 30th September 2018 is freshers’ week. You must attend certain college induction sessions during this week, and your department or faculty may also require you to attend inductions. There will also be the opportunity to attend optional events organised by the MCR or Oxford SU.

Freshers’ dinner on Monday 1st October 2018

On this evening, there will be a special welcome dinner in the Dining Hall for all new graduate students, preceded by a drinks reception. This is hosted by the Principal, and some College Advisors may be in attendance. This is a formal occasion, so you will be expected to dress smartly. Please note that academic gowns are not worn for this or other formal College dinners. Please email catering@some.ox.ac.uk if you have special dietary requirements for this event. There is no charge for this dinner.

Matriculation on Saturday 13th October 2018

Matriculation is the process by which you officially become a member of the University of Oxford. The matriculation ceremony for Somerville students will be held on Saturday 13th October 2018 at 12.00 in the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street. You will be sent more information at the start of term.

You must attend this matriculation ceremony unless:

  1. You have previously matriculated at Oxford.
  2. You hold a degree from the University of Cambridge or Trinity College Dublin. You may be able to incorporate your degree instead of matriculating at Oxford. Please email academic.office@some.ox.ac.uk if you would like to incorporate instead of matriculate.
  3. You are studying for the Advanced Diploma in British and European Studies.
  4. There is a very good reason why you cannot attend on this date. If you need to matriculate but are unavailable, please let the Academic Office know immediately. Please note that you will be required to matriculate at a later date.

First year photograph on Saturday 13th October 2018

The College’s first year photograph will be taken before the matriculation ceremony. Even if you will not be matriculating, please attend the photograph as this will be a record of all students starting a course in 2018. The photographers are Ede and Ravenscroft, and copies of the photograph will be available to purchase later in the term. You will be sent more information at the start of term.
