JCR, OUSU and College Parents
Please read the following information about the Junior Common Room (JCR), Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) and College Parents.
Junior Common Room (JCR)
The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the undergraduate student body (like a student union) of an Oxford College. It is also the name of the common room shared by undergraduate students. All undergraduate students of Somerville College are members of the College’s JCR. The Somerville JCR has an Executive to manage its affairs. In addition to organising social events and offering advice and support in areas including welfare and academic affairs, members of the Executive represent the JCR on the College’s Governing Body and on some of its Standing Committees. The Somerville JCR has two common rooms and a television room. The JCR will be running events for you during freshers’ week. The JCR President’s email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
Oxford University Student Union (OUSU)
Somerville recognises the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU). OUSU can be a source of significant help and advice for students. The Union’s website is at www.ousu.org.
The College Parents system is organised by the JCR, and is common to many Colleges in Oxford. Your College Parent(s) will probably be in the second year of an undergraduate degree at Somerville. They will be on hand to welcome you when you arrive at College, and are there to help you settle into life at Somerville and Oxford. They are your Parents for the whole of your first year, so you won’t be on your own. You will receive a letter (or letters) from your College Parents by email, giving information about freshers’ week and offering some student insights into coming up to Oxford. Please note that your email address will be shared with the JCR unless you opt out by noon on Friday 2nd September 2016. Please email email@example.com if you do not wish your email address to be shared with the JCR.
