Ms Innes is interested in English social policy from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries, in its British and European context. She has published numerous articles; a volume of her collected essays is now in press. She is also co-organiser of a collective project, Re-Imagining Democracy: Europe and the Americas 1750-1850. She was for ten years editor of the journal Past and Present, and has held visiting fellowships and professorships in Australia, Japan, Germany and France.
