Research

The Fellows, Lecturers, Junior Research Fellows and other members of Somerville's Senior Common Room form a rich and diverse research community, together with one hundred or more graduate students who are registered at Somerville at any one time.  The Library is an important resource, and the College also supports research through a system of research leave and by awarding grants and prizes for travel and other needs. 

An increasing number of courses at Oxford require or encourage undergraduates also to undertake research.  Dissertations are required as part of the History and English courses and strongly encouraged in the following subjects Classics, PPE and Philisophy.  In Chemistry, Biochemistry the fourth year of the undergraduate course consists of supervised laboratory research.

 

Fellows' current research interests cover such varied and interesting areas as; continental social theory and feminist thought, nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, the law of trusts and the role of attention in multisensory perception.

With such wide ranging and ground breaking projects it is not surprising that our academics are often awarded prizes, grants and other honours. For up to date information on these visit our Recent awards and grants page.

 

Research by Somerville graduate students

It's not just our senior academics who are involved in fascinating and diverse research. Our graduate students are currently undertaking projects covering topics such as:

"Poetry and national identity in Cyprus and Scotland"

"The molecular basis of Latent transforming growth factor beta binding proteins function"

"Nonlinear hydrodynamics optimisation of a wave energy device". 

"Limit order trading in foreign exchange markets" 

 

Each term there is a special SCR / MCR symposium bringing together members of the Senior and Middle Common Rooms to present and discuss a vast array of research areas.  A new initiative on the part of the MCR is its special session, offered periodically to encourage undergraduates to consider going on to do research degrees at Somerville.
