Daphne Park Bursary Fund

A bursary fund in honour of Daphne Park

In 2010 we mourned the loss of our great Principal and friend, Daphne Park. In honour of the work she has done for the college, we are now launching a fundraising campaign to create the Daphne Park Bursary Fund.

Daphne Park knew what it was to be poor. Oxford and Somerville would have been impossible if she not won a scholarship. £75 made the difference between going and not going to Oxford.

As Principal of Somerville forty years on, Daphne was always acutely aware of the financial difficulties faced by students. There are many stories of her simply putting her hand into her own purse and giving generously.

She realised that good bursary funds would be essential if Somerville was to continue to be open to everyone regardless of private circumstances. She left Somerville a generous legacy to set up a bursary fund, which the College is honoured to name in her memory.

Somerville currently offers financial support to more than 25% of its students and is now seeking to increase the funding available for the increasingly difficult years to come.

Supporting excellence through bursaries was dear to Daphne's heart and so there is no more fitting tribute than to join her in helping future generations of Somervillians to achieve their full potential.
