Junior Common Room

The hub of undergraduate life is the Junior Common Room, or JCR. The term JCR refers to both the communal social areas in college for undergraduates, and the undergraduate body as a whole. The JCR is run by a committee (elected on an annual basis, and consisting of a President, Treasurer, Welfare Officers, Admissions Officer, Academic Affairs Officer, International Students Officer, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Officer and Entertainments Officer). The Committee is responsible for organising JCR meetings (at which issues affecting undergraduates are debated), representing JCR views to Governing Body and to College Officers, and for organising a wide variety of social events in College. JCR Officers are on hand to meet prospective students at Open Days, to support interviewees during the admissions process, and organise a programme of events for Freshers during the first week of term to help them settle into at Somerville.

The JCR produces an Alternative Prospectus each year, and maintain the JCR website. Although Somerville College is not responsible for the content of material produced by the JCR, on this website you should be able to find descriptions of the JCR roles by their current position holders, as well as a brief glimpse into life at this Oxford College.
