The Campaign

Celebrating the Past, Investing in the Future

Somerville’s first major fundraising campaign celebrates the pioneering ethos of the College by raising funds to support academic excellence, accessibility to students, and the creation of world class facilities.

The response of Somervillians and friends in the first phase of the Campaign has been overwhelming. Since the campaign launch in June 2009, we have reached an impressive £16.5 million towards our goal of raising £25 million. An unprecedented 20% of our alumni supported the Campaign in 2009/2010.

The Campaign aims to raise funds to support the three areas crucial to the College’s future well-being:

Student support

At a time of increasing hardship, we aim to increase support for talented students on a needs-blind basis. Our aim is to attract the very brightest minds, irrespective of their financial situation, by increasing support for bursaries and scholarships.

Academic and teaching posts

Somerville continues to champion progressive thinking and academic excellence in teaching and research. Only 60% of Somerville’s teaching posts have endowment to fund them in perpetuity and we rely on support from our donors to preserve the highest quality of teaching and research for the future. We are seeking to endow all of our academic posts in perpetuity.

Buildings and facilities

Our programme for securing the College’s academic excellence is underpinned by a comprehensive plan for improving our facilities for students and Fellows. The Campaign’s flagship project is two striking new student accommodation buildings, located on the University’s Radcliffe Observatory Quarter site.

If you are able to help with a gift, large or small, to any of these priorities, you will be making a real difference to a new generation of Somervillians.
