Mason Porter works in the area of Applied Mathematics.  More specifically, he studies nonlinear dynamics (popularly called "chaos theory"), nonlinear waves, and complex adaptive systems.  The topics he has investigated are very diverse --- they include quantum chaos, billiard systems, social networks, solitary waves, Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear optics, and granular media.
