Somervillians enjoy private screening of 'The Iron Lady'

Somerville students, staff and alumni gathered together to enjoy a private screening of The Iron Lady on Sunday 15th January.

Margaret Thatcher came to study chemistry at Somerville College in 1943. Held at the Phoenix Picturehouse cinema in Oxford, the screening was followed by tea in hall with a lively discussion about the film. The event was met with great enthusiasm, and demand far outstripped the number of seats available.

The College Principal, Dr Alice Prochaska, chaired a panel of students and alumni at Sunday's tea. She told guests: "Margaret Thatcher is one of Somerville's most famous alumni, and the College has always valued its association with her, conferring an honorary fellowship on her long before she became Prime Minister."

Thomas Allsup, second year history student and President of Somerville's JCR, was one of the students on the discussion panel. He says: "I thought that the screening was a great success. It was brilliant to see so many Somervillians, both present and past, filling the cinema and then walking back to College together afterwards. The panel discussion was fantastic in allowing many alumni to share their own recollections of Margaret Thatcher."

Graduate student Inga Pfeffer, who is currently working on a chemistry doctorate, added: "It was a really great opportunity to get together as Somervillians and reflect on a piece of our history."
