College Life

Somerville has around 400 undergraduates and 100 post-graduates. The size of the College helps to foster the open, friendly atmosphere of which Somervillians are justifiably proud. At Somerville, you won’t feel lost among the crowds, and you will have the space to be yourself. Although the centre of your life as a student will be in College, you will also experience the benefits of belonging to the wider university: by attending lectures, seminars and practical sessions in the university departments, and by having the opportunity to join university clubs, societies and sports teams.

Naturally, academic life is the main priority for any Oxford student, and we expect you to fulfil the potential that you showed at interview, and to maintain high academic standards throughout your time here.

However, there are other important aspects of college life: your personal development, the opportunities that you seize, and the non-academic goals that you achieve. At Somerville there is a broad spectrum of extra-curricular activities for you to enjoy ranging from student politics to sports, involvement in charity work to music, drama and arts.

You will find that the resources and facilities available to you at Somerville are among the best in Oxford. In particular the Library, one of the largest in Oxford, and the beautiful Chapel, which is non-denominational.
