Position: Director of Chapel Music

Email:

David Crown was a choral scholar and instrumental award holder at King’s College, Cambridge. He began conducting in his teens, and from conducting his school and youth orchestras, he moved on to conduct many major symphonic works at university, including conducting the Alpha Chamber Orchestra. He has subsequently worked with many eminent conductors including Sir Charles Groves, Sir Simon Rattle, Colin Metters (professor at the RAM), and Martyn Brabbins.  His repertoire extends across the choral and orchestral spectrum from Renaissance to the present day.

In addition to his role of Director of Chapel Music at Somerville College, David is the conductor of the Oxford Singers, and the community choir, The Wychwood Chorale. In autumn 2010, he took over as Music Director of the Reading Phoenix Choir (finalists in the 2010 BBC Choir of the Year competition).

David’s conducting of works such as Strauss’ Metamorphosen, Handel’s Giulio Cesare and the Johannes Passion of Bach received rave reviews in The Times and Oxford Times. He has featured in Classical Music Magazine and The Singer magazine.

As Director of Chapel Music at Somerville, he has led the choir on two highly successful tours (of Germany in summer 2009 and Italy in summer 2010).  Both tours received excellent notices.

In the near future, Somerville Choir will perform Bach’s Johannes Passion and record their first CD, which will include the world premier recording of Robin Milford’s Mass and the Durufle Requiem, with soloists Christine Rice, Mark Stone and Guy Johnston.
