Oxford has a well-deserved reputation for innovative student theatre. Somerville has its own Drama Society, with substantial funds to invest in producing shows, or to stage a Somerville show in the College Quad. Somerville graduates who are forging successful careers as producers or directors include Katie Whittaker, Tessa Ross, Danielle Lux and Martin Roe.
The College plays host to an annual Arts Week, which is organised by the JCR Arts Officer, and aims to showcase as many art forms as possible. In 2010, Arts Week included a photography day, a world music night, a student film screening and a fashion show in the college chapel.
Somerville has a thriving musical scene, spearheaded by the Somerville Music Society, which stages concerts throughout the year, involving many different performers and showcasing all genres. Somerville Music Society also coordinates opportunities for students to provide free music lessons to other members of college. There are pianos available in college for student use, a dedicated music room with a piano and drum kit, and other rooms which can be used for music practice.
The excellent chapel choir sing evensong every Sunday and perform in concerts throughout the year. In 2010 the choir toured Northern Italy for a week, to great acclaim, and in 2011 plan to record their first CD.
